January 1st, 2013.
I made a bunch of stupid New Year’s resolutions last night, one of which was updating this blog today in some way. They seemed like amazing ideas when I had a nice cold beer in my hand (I had already polished off a few others) but now as I sit here staring at the flashing cursor, those ideas don’t seem quite so brilliant anymore. But what kind of man would I be if I gave up on a resolution 12 hours into the new year?
My name is Chris Lahay and in 2012 I graduated from being a “30something” adult to the big 4-0. I live with my wife and two children (our older two have left the house to start their own adventures) and am regularly visited by my 3 year old granddaughter, who has affectionately named me Peepa.
A little over three years ago I decided to leave the newspaper business after 15 years and see if I could figure out how to make a living online. I had already dabbled in freelance writing, webmaster services and online marketing so I thought “Heck, this will be a piece of cake.”
Reality kicked in a few weeks later and my wife was hinting that I might want to start looking for a job, at least on a part-time basis.
Within a few months I had acquired a decent client base and was able to help cover the bills but things were tight in our household for the first year as I continued to grow the company and track down people willing to pay me to do things. I also had to train myself not to get distracted by the commotion of a busy household, some of my favourite television programs and YouTube. I honestly believe the devil gave Steve Chen, Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim the idea to start that sight and bestow the world with the gift of attention deficit disorder.
This past year things have really started to take off, so much so that I hired my first virtual assistant through oDesk to take over some of my duties so I can grow the services I offer to my clients as well as get a few projects off the ground that I’ve been planning in my head for the last three years. I very seldom take on freelance writing tasks anymore but I know that this is something I’m rather well versed in and should I need to fall back on that particular career, I know where to start. In fact I’m writing a book about it so stay tuned!
I am hoping to use this blog to give some tips in the world of online business as I do research for these various projects and reflect on some of the thing I’ve done over the last three years. I figure if I can help someone by tracking down useful information or sharing stories of my tragic failures, why not? I’ll also be using the blog in 2013 to share stories and topics that interest me as well as writing about some of the projects that I’m currently working on.
Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to read a little about me and my adventures thus far. I appreciate it greatly and look forward to interacting with you!
